How often does life present the opportunity to not only make a difference, but to save the life of a child. Let us introduce you to Zoe Brigitte Maria Mazariegos Romero.
Zoe was born on December 17, 2007 with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. Biliary Atresia causes deformity or non-formation of the bile ducts that connect the liver to the small intestine. There is no cure for Biliary Atresia, other than a life sustaining liver transplant, which in the case of Zoe must take place with urgency.
Zoe lives with her parents and brother in Guatemala. Unfortunately for Zoe, and so many other sick children, Guatemala is not equipped to perform this life saving surgery. The mission of the Kellner Family Pediatric Liver Disease Foundation is to "Touch Children's Lives" by eradicating pediatric liver disease and by ensuring that the children suffering from this dreaded disease, and their families who are suffering alongside with them, receive the care that they need. It is time for us to put our mission into action!
The Kellner Family Foundation, together with the Ronald McDonald House and Children of the Americas, have come together with world renowned surgeon Dr. Sukru Emre, of Yale University to save Zoe's life. Together, we are providing funds to cover the traveling and accommodation costs, the liver transplant surgery and all costs incurred during Zoe's hospitalization and recovery.
On Saturday evening, July 12th, Zoe successfully completed her miraculous life-saving journey from Guatemala to JFK. She was immediately transported to Yale University where she was placed in the pediatric intensive care unit. She has been placed in the hands of the very best doctors who will carefully watch over through the completion of her surgery.
Once the surgery is complete, however, the cost of Zoe's on-going medical care will be astronomical. Although her parents, Brigette and Eduardo, have an abundance of the love and support that will be necessary for Zoe to thrive, they cannot possibly afford the on-going cost to ensure Zoe’s survival. Zoe will need to be placed on various medications for the rest of her life, including anti-rejection drugs and will need frequent follow-up medical care to ensure her survival. Zoe, and her parents need our help.
To all of you who have contributed to The Kellner Family Pediatric Liver Disease Foundation, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
